Dorothy was born November 27, 1919 in New Ulm, Minnesota to John J. and Estella (Schmidt) Lieb. She graduated from Trinity High School in New Ulm and Mankato State University with bachelor and master degrees in education.

Dorothy began a 37 year career in education in the rural schools of Brown and Steele counties. She joined the school district in Owatonna as a classroom teacher and eventually became Primary Reading Director, Administrative Assistant, and principal of Roosevelt School. After her retirement from District 761 in 1981, Dorothy worked part-time in local bookstores, participated in pre-school screening, conducted early reading seminars for parents, authored two books: Recipes From Grandma's Kitchen and Whispering Hope, and served as a volunteer for the Owatonna Hospital Auxilary.

Lester Smith and Dorothy married in the Associated Church on October 20, 1947. They made their home in Owatonna and remained lifelong residents.

Dorothy was active in local, regional, and state organizations, served on committees at Associated Church, as president of the Southeast MN Reading Council, and president of the MN Reading Association. She was a fixture at the hospital's Pink Pantry Gift Shop, serving as co-chair. Many benefitted from Dorothy's quilting and baking talents. Coeur d'Alene, Idaho became her second home as she frequently traveled there to be with family. She loved the lakes and mountains of that area and leaves many friends there.

Dorothy is survived by sons David (Dode) and John (Bette), daughter Dolly, daughter-in-law Ione, and brothers Bob and Tom. She has 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband Les, son Bill, and siblings Don, Gertrude, and Gladys.

The Owatonna Business Women honored Dorothy in 2016, presenting to her the first-ever Pioneer Woman of the Year award. As stated in Dorothy's award presentation, "her perseverance and leadership carved significant footprints in the community, creating positive role models for our citizens".

Memorial contributions may be made to the Owatonna Public Library.
