Longtime Steele County resident, Dorothy (Spindler) Hondl, 97, passed away on December 2, 2017 at Sunrise Senior Living, Golden Valley, MN. Mass of Christian Burial is set for Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Owatonna. Friends may greet the family on Friday, Dec. 8, 2017 from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm at Brick – Meger Funeral Home (1603 – Austin Road, Owatonna) and one hour before the funeral liturgy at the church on Sat. A Catholic Daughters Rosary will be recited at 4:45 pm on Fri. at the funeral home.
Dorothy, the youngest of nine children, was born to Frank J. and Agnes Kubista Spindler on Sept. 4, 1920 and grew up near Pratt. After graduating from Steele County District 26 School Dorothy worked as a live-in helper for several families in Owatonna and one in Minneapolis. Dorothy married John F. Hondl on Nov. 26, 1941, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. They worked side-by-side on John's family farm south of Owatonna and raised three daughters. Dorothy was a multi-tasking farm wife, helping with fieldwork, delivering grain to elevators, keeping farm business records, while gardening, cooking, baking, and making a home for her family.
After John passed away in 2002, Dorothy moved to Owatonna. She enjoyed activities at Owatonna Senior Place and was a member of the Owatonna Garden Club, Catholic Daughters of America and Catholic Order of Foresters. Always interested in new places, Dorothy traveled to France, the Canadian Rockies and Costa Rica, as well as nearly 25 states, including many family visits to California and Ohio and trips to Montana and other western states with John. Dorothy collected recipes and enjoyed trying new dishes even in her later years. She was proud of winning the Grand Champion Baker ribbon at the Steele County Fair in 2007 for her angel food cake.
Dorothy loved live music including old-time polkas played on the accordion. She had a talent for music and taught herself to play an electronic keyboard. Reading was a favorite pasttime. She enjoyed biographies especially of America's First Ladies. Dorothy loved flowers and was an expert at growing houseplants, particularly African violets. She was a generous and supportive grandma and great grandma.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband John, her parents and all her siblings. Surviving to cherish Dorothy's memory for a life well-lived are: daughters Nadine Hondl, Rogers, MN; Bernadette (Ken) Thomasy, Sacramento, CA, and Colleen (Don) Gengler, Iona, MN; granddaughters Sara Thomasy (Matt Timberlake), Sacramento, CA; Clare Thomasy, Sacramento; Kimberly Gengler, San Francisco, CA, and Darielle (Isaac) Gengler-Hanson, Richfield, MN., and great granddaughters Charlotte and Sierra Timberlake. Dorothy also leaves behind many relatives including nieces and nephews as well as friends at Ecumen Brooks and in the Owatonna area.
Special thanks to daughter Nadine who gave so much time and loving attention to Dorothy over the years.
